The TMJ (tempromandibular joint) is a flexible hinge joint connecting the temporal bone of the skull to the mandible (lower jaw) controlling all jaw movements.  TMJ syndrome is the effects of strain, stress and trauma to the tempromandibular joint.  When this joint is strained, the jaw clenches and causes teeth grinding, muscle soreness and inflammation leading to blockage of circulation, build-up of lactic acid, toxins, and adhesions overtime.  Those who have TMJ Syndrome generally experience tenderness, weakness, soreness and mild to severe pain affecting daily life, especially sleep.

John P. Goodman, DDS has treatment options for people in Kansas City who suffer from TMJ Syndrome.  Find out how easy it is to find relief before attempting possible harmful, expensive and invasive medications, tests and procedures.

Symptoms of TMJ Syndrome:

  • Tenderness to pressure in cheeks, jaw, forehead and temples.
  • Re-occuring headaches and migraines.
  • Stiff neck and shoulders.
  • Grinding of teeth.
  • Jaw popping or misalignment.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty chewing and opening jaw.
  • Pain in the cheeks, head, and jaw.

TMJ Syndrome is generally caused by stress, trauma or injury, dislocation, or osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.  When the joint is strained, TMJ Syndrome generally progresses to grinding and resulting in heavy wear, sensitivity, soreness, chips, cracks, and breaking of the teeth.

Treatment for TMJ Syndrome

The most effective treatment of TMJ Syndrome is custom made NTI Device (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition Tension Suppression System) with Dr. Goodman.  The NTI Device is a small, acrylic, clear mouth guard worn at night that fits between your front top and bottom teeth.  This prevents the posterior teeth from contacting each other.  This device is designed to be worn long term to suppress and eliminate the reflex to clench and grind.

If you have any questions about whether you have a TMJ issue and would like a treatment option, schedule your appointment by contacting our friendly staff at 816-842-5335.  The appointment for your custom-made TMJ treatment takes as little as 15 minutes!
