Kansas City Family Dentist, John P. Goodman, DDS believes that children should begin regular check-ups with a dentist around 3 years old.  This is generally when kids have grown all of their baby teeth.  When your child is 18 months old, it is usually recommended to have their teeth at least "looked at" by a dentist.  If there are any areas of concern such as: sensitivity, pain, unusual color, chalky white or brown spots or chipped teeth, then your child should see a dentist as soon as possible. 

Before Your Child's First Dental Appointment

We understand that to a child and even some adults, a dental visit can seem very scary and intimidating.  At our office, when your child receives their first tooth os is 1 year old, we offer a "Happy Visit" where you can bring your child with you to your regular dental visit for their first time. This allows children to observe and become more comfortable with the idea of having their own teeth checked once they've seen you go through a dental exam.

Dr. Goodman and our friendly hygienists do a great job of interacting with children and make it a fun experience for everyone.  Your child can sit with you or by themselves in the dental chair.  They are introduced to the equipment, given options, and provided fun facts about their teeth.   Some children have trouble being still or have anxiety and may need to see a specialized pediatric dentist.  A "Happy Visit" is usually no-charge and is a great introduction for your child and their dental care.

Your Child's First Dental Appointment

On your child's first visit it is very similar to yours, but much more fun and gentle. The basic visit consists of a check-up,  polishing, and x-rays. There are also other treatments that children may be recommended to receive to improve oral health.  These preventative treatments are Fluoride and Sealants that protect the teeth to shield them from decay.                           

After every visit, your child gets to visit the treasure chest where they can pick out toys and games for being great patients!
