Mouth guards are able to provide prevention of dental injuries to Kansas City athletes.  Over 5 million teeth are knocked out during athletic sporting activity every year.  The American Dental Association estimates that over 200,000 oral injuries have been prevented by the use of mouthguards.  If those numbers aren't alarming enough, the cost for the dental treatment options after teeth are traumatized or knocked out can range $300-$3000 or more.  Kansas City Dentist, John P. Goodman DDS stresses that the risk of not wearing a mouth guard during high contact sports can be taxing on one's oral health, appearance, and wallet.

The most common complaint about wearing mouthguards is discomfort.   There are several different types of mouthguards on the market from standard "stock" mouthguards to specialized custom fitted guards, which Dr. Goodman highly recommends.  A custom fitted guard fits easier into one's bite providing more comfort and strategic protection.  Store bought mouthgaurds cost around $10, however are usually built bulky and force the jaw into a clenched position.

Dr. Goodman recommends Playsafe mouthguards and can have yours specially fit and customized in as little as two weeks for $150.00.  With an impression of your teeth, the mouthguard is structured to fit comfortably where breathing is natural and one's attention can stay on the game.  Statistics have shown when these mouthguards are worn properly the risk of injury decreases by 99 percent.  These mouthguards can even be personalized with different colors, styles,  and logos.

It is also very important to clean the mouthguard before and after use to prevent any bacteria growth, odor, and plaque build-up.  A mouthguard can be cleaned by being rinsed and brushed with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
