Minimally Invasive Non-Surgical Scaling and Root Planing

Gum disease can typically be prevented with non-surgical periodontal treatments like scaling or root planing at our Kansas City, MO, practice. These minimally invasive procedures offer an affordable way to slow the progression of gum disease and protect your overall health. It is important to treat gum disease in its earliest stages to prevent the onset of more serious conditions like shifting teeth, tooth loss, and bone deterioration. In your consultation, Dr. John P. Goodman will assess your oral health and recommend the option most appropriate for you. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Goodman can provide you with excellent and customized periodontal care.

Why Treating Gum Disease is Important

Also known as periodontitis, gum disease is a serious bacterial overgrowth that affects your teeth, gums, and jawbone. When diagnosed in its earliest stages as gingivitis, side effects are manageable and often reversible with a deep cleaning or scaling and root planing treatment. However, if left untreated, the infection can lead to tooth loss and costly restorative procedures, such as dental implants. In its most advanced stages, the infection can enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.

There are many benefits to treating gum disease with preventative care and nonsurgical procedures as opposed to periodontal surgery or restorative treatments.

Catching gum disease in its earliest stages can save you time and money and protect your overall health. During your routine checkup, Dr. Goodman will check for:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Red and inflamed gums
  • Dental sensitivity
  • Gum recession
  • Bad breath

Types of Treatments Provided

If gum disease is detected during your routine checkup, Dr. Goodman can recommend two different types of nonsurgical treatments:

Dental Cleanings

Visiting the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning can help to prevent gum disease. During your cleaning, a dental hygienist will thoroughly eliminate plaque and bacteria from the surface of your teeth with specialized dental instruments. Your hygienist will gently floss in between each tooth and use an ultrasonic toothbrush to polish and brighten your smile. He or she may also recommend fluoride treatment to protect your teeth against tooth decay. At the end of your visit, Dr. Goodman will examine your teeth and gums for changes in your overall oral health.

Scaling and Root Planing

As part of your scaling and root planing treatment, Dr. Goodman will numb your gums with a topical anesthetic and use a scaler to remove plaque buildup below the gum line. If necessary, sedation can also be provided. Next, he will use a planing device to smooth the dental roots, which allows for the gums to seamlessly reattach to the base of the tooth. Once treatment is complete, Dr. Goodman will provide you with a prescription mouthwash to prevent infection.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Methods

There are many benefits to treating gum disease with preventative care and non-surgical procedures as opposed to periodontal surgery or restorative treatments, including:

  • Shorter treatment and recovery
  • Minimally invasive
  • Minimal discomfort
  • More affordable

For long-lasting results, it is imperative to maintain a good oral healthcare regimen. This involves brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, rinsing with your prescribed mouthwash, and visiting Dr. Goodman for routine oral examinations.
