The loss of a tooth can have a severe impact on your smile. Missing several teeth may adversely affect not only your mouth's overall function, but your confidence as well. Fortunately, dental bridges serve to assist Kansas City, MO, patients who are suffering from tooth loss. Thus, your smile can both look and function naturally again! With restorative dentistry, you can enjoy the benefits of improved oral health.
Dental bridges work as described, literally bridging gaps in your smile. The restoration consists of a prosthetic tooth (or teeth when more than one tooth is missing), which is secured by dental crowns placed on the natural teeth on either side of the gap created by the missing tooth. John P. Goodman, D.D.S. performs this beneficial restorative procedure at our state-of-the-art facility.
Benefits of Dental Bridges
Dental bridges provide numerous benefits for the patient, such as:
- Assist ability to chew
- Prevent remaining teeth from shifting
- Reduces risk of periodontal disease
- Lowers chances for tooth decay
- May be supported by dental crowns
- More stable than dentures
- Less invasive placement than dental implants
- Natural-looking and functioning
Dr. Goodman also offers implant-supported bridges that have several additional benefits.
Placing Dental Bridges
The process of placing dental bridges is generally done in two stages at our Kansas City practice:
Stage 1: Dr. Goodman begins by preparing the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Once they are cleaned, he will remove part of the existing tooth structure in order to receive the dental crowns that will act as supports for the bridge (it may be necessary to use a local anesthetic for your comfort). We will then take an impression and send it to our laboratory where your permanent restorations will be customized to blend with your natural smile. Our dentist will provide you with temporary crowns and a bridge to protect your teeth and gums from further damage, while your new restorations are crafted.
Stage 2: Soon, your permanent dental bridge will be ready! When you return to our office, Dr. Goodman will replace your temporary restorations with the permanent crowns that attach the bridge, carefully securing them with cement or bonding solution. He will then make sure the new tooth restorations fit comfortably with every aspect of your smile.
